Oliver "Ollie" Capullo (born June 3, 1994) is half of the queer punk duo, sinnabon.
Oliver Capullo was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He is an only child and has stated that he is "essentially an orphan but minus the Batmanesque revenge streak. Or the dead parents." He came out on a small, private scale when he was 16 but due to issues with internalized homophobia, he did not consider himself fully "out" until forming Sinnabon in college, using the band as a way to publicly identify as queer for the first time.
Capullo met his bandmate in 2013 while studying Studio Arts at Bard College. Sinnabon formed when Capullo was approached about possibly starting a band to play a female and queer-fronted on-campus music festival. He wasn’t open about his sexuality at the time and he had never performed before due to extreme stage fright. He agreed anyway. The festival never actually happened but they both agreed they wanted to keep writing together. The band started out with two other members but they decided to pursue recording as a duo.
Sinnabon recorded and released their demo, Cinderella Beauty Shop, and half of a split-EP, Republican National Convention, while still based out of Bard College. One of the founders of Father/Daughter records retweeted a video Capullo had directed for the song “Carbs” and he sent her a DM asking if she would be interested in working with them on a full-length. On the previous releases, Capullo played guitar and sang but starting with Ugly Cherries, their debut full-length, the two began to share vocal and songwriting duties, leading to them trading places onstage throughout their shows. Sinnabon travels with a bassist to fill out their sound on stage.
The band is known for being active in the LGBTQ+ community. Their songs touch on issues of gender, queerness, depression and relationships. Elements of drag are often incorporated into their performances. Capullo initially used covering his face in glitter and wearing a dress as a way of coping with his stage fright, explaining that standing out on his own terms made it less difficult to handle the attention.
As of late 2016, the band has signed to Polyvinyl Record Co. and have finished recording their sophomore album.
Fans have linked Capullo to various actors and musicians but he has never confirmed any romantic relationships, including rumors that he has dated Carlisle De Vries of blackcurrent. He lives in Los Angeles, California, but often spends time in Brooklyn, New York, where the rest of the band is currently located. He is openly gay and although he identifies as gender non-confirming, he has chosen to continue using male pronouns. He is Jewish and South African on his mother's side.
Capullo is energetic and outspoken. He has a reputation of being promiscuous that he often encourages and never denies. He is very politically active and uses social media as a platform for not only sharing his opinions but encouraging others to speak out. Interviews with him can be difficult since he may be resistant to opening up or even focusing but he is articulate when he feels passionate about a particular subject.
